“They used to say I was born with a fork in my mouth. I was always told to eat everything on my plate. The overriding factor contributing to my weight was sweets.  In addition, I inherited my father’s genes; which unfortunately consisted of a large frame, and a tendency to gain weight more easily.  Conversely, my mother’s side of the family was thin. To add insult to injury, my sister was fortunate enough to inherit my mom’s genes.”

Stop Negative Thinking in It’s Tracks

Have you ever had a negative thought? Have you ever uttered it out loud, even in jest?  Most of us have.  More importantly, more often than we’d like to admit.  Negative thinking can be damaging not only to our self-esteem, but can begin a cycle of thought and behavior which negatively impacts our own perception of events in our lives.

For example: Perhaps you’ve been assigned a special project at work. You’re confident in taking it on, but upon completion you notice one tiny error. You begin to berate the way in which you handled the project, even though the error was not significant. While your boss is telling you what a great job you’ve done, you begin to make excuses for it. Your negativity has minimized the entire project, and magnified one area of it.

Teen Confidence - Helping Your Child Gain More Confidence

Many teens suffer through the pain of never feeling good enough. They face pressure to fit into a crowd among their peers. Feelings of inadequacy are the norm for teens, as they are many times unsure of themselves.

Use these tips to help build your teen’s confidence:

1. Encourage mental and social growth. Involve your teen in academic clubs and after school activities in which she’s interested. Look at every extracurricular activity as a way for your teen to learn and grow. Nurture your teen’s strengths and help her develop expertise in the areas where she is most knowledgeable.
